NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS Diploma in Clinical Perfusion; at least 3 years of experience in Cardiac Surgery Centers.
This role requires complete autonomy in performing cardiovascular infusion techniques for adult and pediatric patients.
CONTEXT AND ORGANIZATION OF WORK
The International Perfusionist is part of the Salam Centre’s medical-surgical team, which is made up of international specialists working alongside national staff in training. He/She is accountable to an international technical expert (Team Leader) and to the Medical Coordinator, who is in charge of the management and organization of the project.
The main areas of work are:
- OPERATING ROOMS: 3 operating rooms equipped to perform Cardiac Surgery;
- CATH LAB: 1 cardiac catheterization laboratory fully equipped to perform diagnostic and therapeutic interventions;
- INTENSIVE CARE UNIT: 15 fully equipped beds (2 isolation beds).
The Center has the capacity to perform up to 5-6 operations per day, 5 days a week. A variable number of international technical specialists are present, sometimes accompanied by staff in training. The on-call duty includes nights and public holidays.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
All international EMERGENCY staff must know and follow the hospital admission criteria, guidelines, protocols and standards for diagnosis and treatment in force in the Center, and ensure the correct compilation of clinical records and statistics in computer and paper format.
The main tasks and responsibilities of the international perfusionist are:
- extracorporeal circulation pump management (heart-lung machine), cell saver and intra-aortic balloon pump equipment;
- participation in the discussion of surgical intervention proposals with cardiologist and cardiac surgeon colleagues;
- Collaborate with medical staff cardiac surgery planning;
- assist in clinical research and record keeping as required by the scientific programs of the specialized area of the medical division of EMERGENCY.
The international perfusionist is responsible for check that the supplies of materials and devices are always adequate in terms of quantity and qualityand to inform the team leader and/or medical coordinator of any requirements.
MANAGEMENT AND TRAINING OF LOCAL STAFF
Clinical activities and patient care are always carried out alongside and in collaboration with local staff, who thus benefit from on-the-job training. More specific teaching activities are also planned, managed by the international specialists, in accordance with the clinical protocols in force and in agreement with the medical coordinator.
NUMBER OF PEOPLE AND EQUIPMENT
“SALAM” CENTER FOR CARDIAC SURGERY – Khartoum, Sudan
Patients with all types of congenital and acquired heart disease present at the Centre. The workload is extremely varied and can sometimes be pre-selected depending on the experience of the specialists present over a given period. Most patients presenting to the hospital are seriously weakened: the main cause is that the health system and therefore treatment, both in the country and in the region as a whole, is chargeable.
Since 2007 the Hello Center was the only completely free heart surgery center in the region. The Center constitutes the scientific and operational core of a network of pediatric clinics located in neighboring countries which also provide screening and follow-up for adult and pediatric cardiac surgery patients. The pathologies most frequently treated are valvular heart disease of rheumatic origin (RHD – Rheumatic Heart Disease), congenital heart disease amenable to surgical treatment and ischemic heart disease in the non-acute phase; over the last 10 years of activity (2008 – 2017), approximately 55.5% of patients admitted are under 26 years old.
Due to the advanced level of the work carried out, the equipment available and the technical, architectural and managerial innovations, the Hello The Cardiac Surgery Center is considered an international center of excellence.
GUIDELINES, PROTOCOLS AND EQUIPMENT
Further information on guidelines, protocols and clinical services relevant to the position as well as details on available instruments and equipment will be provided during the interview and during the preparation period for the assignment. The general requirements and conditions apply to all international staff.
- Diploma, post-graduate diploma or equivalent certification in clinical infusion, with professional accreditation and registration in your country of residence;
- at least 3 years of relevant professional experience;
- experience in cardiac surgery centers.
Stay abroad of 6 months including a period of leave to be taken at the end of the mission in agreement with the coordinator. Shorter assignments can only be considered for specific needs as defined by the organization.
