Student initiated to Omicron Delta Kappa

LEXINGTON, Va. – Everett native William Prescott was recently inducted into the University of Akron Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society. The society welcomed 578 new initiates from 25 universities in March 2022.

Society-Initiated students must be sophomores, juniors, seniors, or graduate/professional students in the top 35% of their class, demonstrate leadership experience in at least one of the five pillars, and embrace the ODK ideals. Less than 5% of students on a campus are invited to join each year.

Student present at research, scholarship fair

BRADFORD, — Kira Crawford, a DuBois biology student, presented “Japanese Fashion: Borrowing and Sharing with the World” at the University of Pittsburgh Bradford Annual Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Fair held on April 8.

Thiel medical assistants receive white coats

GREENVILLE — The 37 members of the first class of Thiel College’s new physician assistant curriculum attended a ceremony to receive their white coats on April 2.

Cameron Domblisky of Philipsburg received a white coat as part of the ceremony.

The white coats these students received represent the completion of the first half of their studies in the 27-month college PA program.

During the ceremony, as part of the commencement address, Thiel President Susan Traverso, Ph.D., reminded students of their importance to the college as the inaugural class of medical assistant students.

“Your program and other graduate programs are a historic moment at Thiel,” she says. Although the college has been around since 1866, never before has it had a program like this that focuses on developing future healthcare professionals.

SRU Senior Dance Concert culminates research

SLIPPERY ROCK – Slippery Rock University’s Bachelor of Fine Arts dance majors closed the book on their research by completing the epilogue, i.e. presenting to “The Epilogue: A Senior BFA Dance Concert,” April 23 at the Stoner West Dance Studio Theater.

Among the nine BFA senior dance majors who presented were Anna DeRubeis, a senior double dance major and early childhood primary from Altoona, and Faythe Lewis, a senior dance major from Tyrone.

The concert, organized by the SRU Dance Department, included choreography and performances by nine BFA senior dance students, as well as work by Atlanta-based choreographer Lashonda Johnson.

The nine seniors presented a variety of dance types, such as modern, contemporary, jazz and improvisation.

Some of the senior BFA student’s performances were solo dances while others included group performances with SRU students.

Additionally, senior BFA students performed “Return to sender,” a piece choreographed by Johnson which is described by organizers as “a powerful and athletic dance that demonstrates the technical and performative virtuosity of the dancers.

Clarion Student Receives Academic Award

CLARION — Marissa Amerine of Altoona, a student at Clarion University of Pennsylvania, received the WEB DuBois Academic Award at the Multicultural Student Recognition Dinner April 9 at the university.

The WEB DuBois Academic Award is given to a student who has a GPA of 3.5 or higher and who attended the spring and fall semesters in the previous year.

Altoona native honored at Slippery Rock Univ.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University’s Office of Student Engagement and Leadership presented its 2021-22 awards April 20 at the Smith Student Center.

The Offices of Housing and Residence Life presented Sydney Lewis, a young exercise science student from Altoona, with the Rising Rookie Community Assistant Award.

SRU Spring Intake Student

SLIPPERY ROCK – More than 1,600 eligible graduates received their degrees as Slippery Rock University held its Spring 2022 commencement ceremonies May 6-7 at Morrow Field House. The ceremonies were also broadcast live.

The student marshals and university flag bearers for each ceremony included the following graduate students who respectively held their respective university flag or the SRU flag for their ceremony:

Elizabeth Manley, Graduate in Security Management and English Writing from Altoona (College of Business).
