New Recruits Accepted into Fredonia Schools | News, Sports, Jobs

The Fredonia School Board held a special meeting via Zoom last week to confirm new hires and accept resignation letters. Fredonia Superintendent Dr. Bradley Zilliox said that because nothing is final until board approval, he wanted to give several people on hold some certainty about their future.

“Until board approval, people sometimes don’t feel comfortable submitting resignation letters or moving forward with processes or opting out of other processes” , Zilliox said. “This is a meeting that we added only to remove some of these endorsements from the list and allow these people to continue making plans.”

Although the reunion only took place a week before their regular meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Zilliox said it was important to get these people through as quickly as possible.

One of these new hires was Michelle Russ, who will soon take over as middle school music teacher, a post left vacant due to retirement. Russ received his Bachelor of Music from SUNY Fredonia and his Masters from the University at Buffalo. She is certified K-12 music and has 16 years of teaching experience in a non-public setting and is currently an instrumental music teacher for the Paul Effman Music Organization.

“She teaches about 100 students in grades one through eight…and currently performs in several orchestras and ensembles,” Zilliox said. “She had two building-level interviews with our music department…and was deemed the candidate of choice.”

Russ lives in Amherst with her husband and two children, and has taught extensively in the private sector, but said she enjoys working in the public sector, especially in Fredonia.

“I wanted to thank everyone for having a great interview experience,” she says. “I am very excited to start working in the district. I had my college experience there and love the town, so it will be fun to get back to my Fredonia roots.”

Other new recruits to Fredonia include Michelle Dawley and Madeline Webb, both of whom will be hired as trainee teachers in business education. Zilliox said they will share more information about these new recruits at their next meeting, although Webb will not be present due to travel issues.
