Stepping into the Fort Museum and Frontier Village on Friday night was like stepping back in time to the 1850s.

A blacksmith tends to his forge, lumberjacks roll logs across water, and trading posts set up offering a variety of goods.

The 47th annual Frontier Days celebration kicked off Friday afternoon with an opening ceremony at the Avenue of Flags.

Jordyn Putney, a recent graduate of St. Edmond’s Catholic School, sang the national anthem as Air National Guardsmen from the 133rd Test Squadron raised the American flag.

Frontier Days Parade Grand Marshals John and Margo Daniel were joined by representatives from the Greater Fort Dodge Growth Alliance to officially open the celebration.

“I’m speechless, but I wanted to thank everyone who supported this,” said John Daniel. “This is going to be one of the biggest and best Frontier Days in a long time. Let’s have a great time.

It takes a lot of people to organize this event.

“I want to thank all of my volunteers – all of the people who stepped up to put Frontier Days on the map,” said organizer Terry Cook, welcoming visitors at the opening ceremony on Friday evening. “That’s a lot of hours.”

The festivities will resume today at 10 a.m. with the Frontier Days Parade taking place on Central Avenue. Over 100 entries were included in the parade this year.

The Frontier Days grounds at the Fort Museum will be open from 10 a.m.

Admission wristbands this year will cost $6 each, or $22 in total for a family of four.
