As part of a wider global expansion, new Irish jobs at Planet will range from roles in technology and finance to product development.
Planet, the Galway-based fintech, is creating 100 new jobs in Ireland as part of a global expansion over the next few months that includes 500 new jobs across its international operations.
The new roles in Ireland will be split between Galway, Kilkenny and Dublin, and will include hybrid and remote jobs in a range of areas such as product development, technology and finance.
Founded in 1985 as Cashback, Planet is now a digital payment platform for services such as acquiring, processing, digital wallets and currency conversion. It has clients in retail, hospitality, parking and financial services.
The new jobs announcement comes less than a year after Planet secured an investment from private equity firm Advent International, in a deal that saw the company’s valuation soar to 1.8 billion euros.
In June 2020, Planet acquired Luxembourg-based 3C Payment in a bid to fuel its growth. The merger saw Planet double the value of the transactions it processes each year to €45 billion.
Today, Planet manages more than 800 million transactions per year for a value of more than 50 billion euros.
Good news for Galway
Minister of State for the Department for Transport, Hildegarde Naughton, TD, hailed the jobs announcement as “great news for Galway City”, where the business has been based since its inception and where many new jobs will be created.
“We expect these 100 new jobs to have a big impact on the city and further strengthen Galway’s reputation as a great city for business and innovation,” she said.
Planet has a special connection to the city as its founders Aidan Daly, Jim Ward and Gerry Barry worked together to start the business in NUI Galway. Many central business functions, including product development, human resources, treasury, finance and marketing, are based at the Galway headquarters.
Over the years, Planet has bagged some major clients in the hospitality and retail industries, including hotel groups Radisson, Hilton and Marriott, as well as Gucci, Armani and Hugo Boss.
Peter Daly, President of Retail at Planet, said he was delighted with the expansion of the global team and said he was “proud that our teams in Ireland continue to be the driving force behind the development of the most innovative solutions.” for traders around the world.
The company currently advertises many vacancies on its website, including dozens of tech jobs in Ireland.
