From Scotland, it took John Higgins an adventure to get to Xavier

The best stories are unexpected. They are filled with triumphs and heartbreaks, and along the way, detours that leave doubt about the destination.

John Higgins, the new men’s football coach at Xavier University, has a story like this, which took him from Oakley, a small village in Scotland, to the United States in search of a dream that he didn’t want to give up.

John Higgins, Xavier's new men's soccer coach, hails from Scotland. It took him quite an adventure to get to where he is today.

Higgins played youth football for Celtic and then for his local club, Dunfermline, until he was 18. This led to a two-year youth training contract.

“At the end of the two years, they decide ‒ here’s a real pro contract, lots of money, the whole thing, or hey man, you’re not good enough,” Higgins said.

At the end of his sophomore year, Higgins was offered a pro contract.
