Asylum Seeker and Family Specialist (ASF) – United States of America

Job overview:

The reception center is an emergency shelter for migrants and asylum seekers who have recently been released from government custody. The Reception Center aims to provide safe respite and supportive emergency services to asylum seekers while they coordinate their journey to their new home in the United States.

The Asylum Seekers and Family Specialist (ASF) will provide direct care services and ensure the safety of families at the IRC reception centre. The ASF Specialist provides direct services to asylum seekers to ensure that all basic needs are met during their stay. Through their work, ASF specialists support advocacy efforts on behalf of migrants and asylum seekers in the United States. This role is also regularly coached and modeled for program volunteers, staff and providers at the drop-in centre. The ASF Specialist operates under supervision with moderate latitude for the use of independent judgment and initiative.

Main responsibilities:

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Organize client reception, including legal orientation, support travel arrangements and provide resources to clients in their destination locations.

  • Ensure clients have access to all services provided at the shelter, including meals, bedding, clothing and personal hygiene supplies as needed.

  • Respond to client questions regarding reception center services and next steps in the asylum process.

  • Maintain a clean, safe, secure and stable center; clean and organize the center and maintain child-friendly spaces.

  • Complete inventory of visitor center supplies and restock for next day operations.

  • Provide support to customers in distress, such as calling emergency services as needed.

  • Perform rounds throughout the shift to ensure that all services are functioning properly.

  • Respond to questions from clients and volunteers with kindness and enthusiasm.

  • Ensure adherence to case documentation, case management and reporting requirements, adhering to strict confidentiality guidelines.

  • Participate in all program meetings, staff development activities and fully engage as a member of the team.

  • Actively participate in the development and growth of the Welcome Center service areas.

  • Comply with all IRC policies, procedures and protocols, including compliance with the IRC Way and child protection.

  • Other related duties assigned.

Key Working Relationships:

The position reports to: Supervisor of Asylum Seekers and Families

Indirect report: Asylum seekers and families program manager
The position directly supervises: Interns and volunteers involved in services for asylum seekers
Other internal and/or external contacts: Community partners, volunteer organizations.

Internal: ASF IRC Programs

External: TSA, ICE and partner organizations and community entities also involved in serving asylum seekers.

Job requirements:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in social work or related field of study preferred.

Professional experience:

  • At least two years of demonstrated relevant work experience in the field of human services; preferably in a non-profit or social service agency environment. Shelter/residence experience preferred.

  • Previous experience working with refugee populations or asylum seekers is highly valued.

Demonstrated skills and competencies:

  • Fluency in written and spoken English; Bilingual ability in Spanish required.
  • Proven ability to contribute both independently and as a key team member, self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills combined with proven ability to multi-task, prioritize tasks and manage work time efficiently.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and strong keyboarding and research skills.
  • Good communication skills; experience in a multicultural environment desired.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, active insurance policy, access to reliable transportation, and the ability to travel regularly within the service delivery area.
  • Ability and willingness to drive a 15 passenger van.
  • Per Arizona State law, must possess or be eligible to receive a fingerprint authorization card.
  • Must be able to work non-traditional hours, such as weekends, nights and holidays as required.

Working environment:**

  • The Visitor Center is a 24-hour facility; flexible working hours, including holidays, evenings and weekends with regular contact with ASF clients and volunteers.
