Assistant University Librarian Archivist


The Albert S. Cook Library at the University of Towson seeks a dynamic and innovative individual to fill the position of Assistant Librarian Archivist of the university. This position is a 12-month faculty position available in fall 2022. Required: A master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent accredited degree and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion are required. Ability to assume various responsibilities related to archival materials in all formats, including selection, appraisal, arrangement and description, preservation, access and dissemination. Demonstrated professional or academic experience with basic standards of preservation and conservation of archival and manuscript collections. Demonstrated knowledge of current national data content and structure standards related to archival control of collection materials. Ability to assist in disaster recovery efforts. Demonstrated knowledge of archive and library software applications. Strong and positive interpersonal and collaborative skills; ability to work in a team environment. Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated initiative and ability to work independently and collaboratively on a variety of projects simultaneously. Demonstrated excellent organizational, analytical, time management and project management skills. Ability to work flexibly and creatively in a rapidly changing environment with a diverse population. Demonstrated ability to meet University criteria for promotion and tenure status for library faculty. Ability to work with a diverse population. Commitment to continued growth in areas of responsibility. Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Special Collections and University Archives, the Associate University Archivist plays a key and collaborative role in building, managing, supporting research and teaching, and promoting the use and engagement with university records documenting the history of Towson University through the diverse voices and experiences of past and present students, faculty, and staff. The Assistant University Archivist manages the transfer, acquisition, arrangement, description and preservation of university archives of all formats. Uses appropriate best practices and strategies to ensure accessibility, preservation, discovery, and use of academic records and the collective memory of the institution. Prepares research aids, descriptive metadata and research guides in accordance with relevant professional standards and established local practices through the use of ArchivesSpace, Quartex, LibGuides and related software. Assists in preservation assessment and collection management and selection of materials for conservation treatment. Contributes to unit reference, awareness and training. Completes assigned special projects. Participates in library evaluation initiatives. This position is a 12-month professor status position. Librarians are expected to progress successfully on the path to promotion and tenure and participate fully as library faculty members. Rank is determined by qualifications at the time of appointment.
